In the heart of the Upsilon Sigma Phi fraternity’s long and storied tradition of service and excellence, the Upsilon Medical Assistance Program (UMAP) has emerged as a guiding light of hope and solidarity. As we reflect on the recent events and achievements surrounding this noble initiative, it is impossible not to be moved by the profound impact it has had on countless lives.
At the 25th Anniversary Bente Singko Global Reunion in Las Vegas, expertly organized by Jhovin Poblete ’79, UMAP’s impact was powerfully showcased. The reunion, a gathering of hearts and minds dedicated to the fraternity’s enduring legacy, saw an impressive $61,000 raised, a testament to the unwavering support of the Upsilon community. This remarkable sum, gathered from generous donors and event proceeds, underscores the fraternity’s collective commitment to its members’ welfare. Among the highlights was a substantial $10,000 contribution to the USPAA’s endowment fund, a crucial step toward securing a sustainable future for UMAP.
Led by stalwarts like Ramon “Mon” Allado ’73, Dr. William “Bill” Romero ’76, and Dr. Alan Austriaco ’86, the UMAP team’s impassioned appeals resonated deeply. Dr. Austriaco, the head of the UMAP Medical Triage Team, detailed the program’s remarkable journey, revealing that UMAP has assisted over 693 fellows and their families, disbursing more than 1.8 million pesos in medical aid since its inception in 2021. This achievement is not merely a number; it is a lifeline extended to those in dire need, a testament to the fraternity’s enduring spirit of service.
The Bente Singko Reunion’s proceeds were not only a financial boon but also a reaffirmation of Upsilon’s enduring values. The allocation of funds to the Medical Triage Team’s discretionary fund, the University of the Philippines Alumni Association’s feeding program, and future reunion endeavors in Singapore further illustrates the fraternity’s holistic approach to support and community building.
Historically, Upsilon Sigma Phi has always been at the forefront of societal contributions, from its inception in 1918 to its pivotal role in various social causes. The UMAP is a continuation of this legacy, transforming the fraternity’s ethos into tangible, life-saving interventions. The program’s growth from a modest initiative to a cornerstone of support for over 500 fellows and their families is nothing short of inspiring. The disbursement of over 1.5 million pesos in financial assistance is a vivid illustration of the impact that sustained, collective effort can achieve.
The journey of UMAP is a story of commitment, resilience, and unyielding support. It is a narrative that would not have been possible without the dedication of the Upsilonian MDs who have devoted their time and expertise. These heroes, who often work behind the scenes, have made extraordinary sacrifices to ensure that no Upsilonian is left behind in their hour of need. Their tireless efforts have been the backbone of UMAP’s success, embodying the fraternity’s spirit of fraternity and service.
As UMAP celebrates its 30th month, we are reminded of the profound difference that collective action can make. The detailed accounts of the cases handled by the Medical Triage Team, to be shared with the fraternity, will further illuminate the significance of our contributions. It is a call to all Upsilonians to continue their support, to deepen their engagement, and to help us reach our goal of a permanent endowment fund of 50 million pesos.
To all who have contributed to UMAP’s journey—your generosity, your time, your unwavering belief in this cause—thank you. Your support has not only saved lives but has also strengthened the bonds that hold our brotherhood together. As we look to the future, let us carry forward this legacy with the same passion and dedication, ensuring that UMAP continues to be a beacon of hope and assistance for generations of Upsilonians to come.
Here’s to Upsilon Sigma Phi and the enduring spirit of UMAP. May we continue to soar, achieving new heights of service and solidarity. The journey is far from over, and with your continued support, the best is yet to come.
